Here are ways to set up multiple display outputs for your home, office, or business that can simultaneously showcase a single picture or video across all monitors. All with the help of a trusty HDMI Extender.

HDMI Extenders are used to extend displays over a certain distance. Standard HDMI Splitters go up to 30 feet due to the limitation of HDMI cables. HDMI Extenders take the help of LAN cables to overcome this distance limitation of HDMI. In this article, we’ll discuss how we can utilize an Ethernet cable along with an HDMI Extender to stream content over long distances.

What is an HDMI Extender over Ethernet?

HDMI Extender over Ethernet works exactly as you’d expect from an HDMI Extender. However, as the name suggests, an ethernet cable is what’s used to connect the transmitter module to the receiver module.

How it works

HDMI Ethernet Extender, or HDMI Balun, works through its transmitter and receiver modules. Its transmitter module converts HDMI signals into a special type of data that can travel through the Ethernet cable, which is then received and converted back to an HDMI signal by the receiver module.

What are the main benefits of using ethernet cables for HDMI Extenders?

    1. Flexibility: Ethernet cables are thinner, making them more flexible and easier to navigate through walls, ceilings, or conduits.
    2. Extended Reach: HDMI over LAN cables allows for much longer cable runs, with some reaching up to 300 feet or more, compared to the typical 50 feet for HDMI cables.
    3. Less costly: Although there are HDMI cables that could reach the same distances that CAT cables can, they are much more expensive. CAT cables, on the other hand, can do the same job for less than half of the usual price for extended HDMI cables.
  • Ease of Use: Using CAT cables is very straightforward. All you have to do is simply plug in each end to their respective ports and you’re good to go.

  • Now that we’re more familiar with how HDMI Extender over Ethernet works, let’s cite a product that can do all of this and more.

The OREI HD14-EX165-K is an HDMI Balun that can simultaneously cast one input device to 4 different displays up to 165 feet using a CAT 6/6a/7 cable and can stream up to Full HD 1080P with a refresh rate of 50/60Hz. You may check out a quick run through of its specifications below.

Here are more of OREI HD14-EX165-K features that you’ll surely find useful.

  • POE (Power Over Ethernet)
  • With this product supporting POE, it eliminates the need for any power supplies for its receiver modules at the remote location. This feature greatly simplifies the planning and wiring involved for traditional HDMI Extenders

  • Local Playback of Content
  • Local Playback of Content allows you to enjoy the same content you’re transmitting to all four different displays at your primary location. This means that you can also set up a primary display at your primary location so you can manage and control all your display outputs easier.

  • Infrared Blaster
  • Infrared (IR) Control is a feature that the OREI HD14-EX165-K has, that allows you to use the source device remote at the receiver module to control the source device at the transmitter module.. With the included IR cables, you can remotely control your source device from one of your receiver locations without having to be physically present at your primary location.

  • EDID & EQ Switch
  • These switches allow you to make manual adjustments for the different styles of media that you would like to transmit to your remote locations.

    EDID Switch

This switch is located in your transmitter module, and it is used to adjust the synchronization of the audio and video playing at all your remote locations. To use this, you have to dial in the exact standard that you’re using for your media.

    EQ Switch

The EQ switch, located on your receiver modules, helps your devices adjust for different cable lengths. Since four receivers can be placed at varied distances, this switch allows you to adjust how far away it actually is so that the amount of power that comes through the cable does not affect the video quality.

How to set up the OREI HD14-EX165-K

Before you use this HDMI Extender, you may want to start by planning the location of your remote monitors and the routing of your CAT cables. When routing cables, especially on the floor, make sure that it’s well protected so that nothing can damage it. Once you already have a system in place, you may now proceed with the following steps.

    1. Set up your transmitter and receiver modules at your primary and remote locations, as well as your input device and the HDMI media content that you’ll be streaming. If you’ll be using a monitor at your primary location, you may also set it up now.
    2. Connect your media player (input device) to your transmitter using an HDMI cable.
    3. If applicable, connect the monitor at your primary location to your transmitter model using an HDMI cable.
    4. Connect your transmitter module to a power source using its dedicated power adapter.
    5. Connect one end of your CAT cables to their respective LAN ports.
    6. Connect the other end of your CAT cables to the LAN port on the Receivers.
    7. Connect your display to the Receivers using an HDMI cable.
    8. Power up all your devices and start streaming your content.

How to set up Infrared Control

    1. Connect the IR Receiver to one of your receiver modules.
    2. Connect the IR Blaster to your transmitter module.

How to set up the EDID and EQ switches

To adjust the EDID and EQ switches, you may follow the chart included in the product manual.
